The Background of Emergency Emergency is one of the darkest and most controversial periods in the history of Indian politics. It was imposed by the Smt. Indira Gandhi ruled Congress Government on 25 th June 1975 . It lasted for 19 months . The Emergency has been widely condemned for its curtailment of civil liberties, arrests of Indira Gandhi’s political opponents, and censorship of the press. In order to understand the emergency period better, it is necessary to understand the situations that led to the declaration of the emergency and beginning of the most evil period in the history of Indian Politics.
